A personal tribute to Brother Raymond follows written by a staff member in Pres, Bray. Brother Ray is leaving his position as Chaplain in the school having been recently appointed Province Leader of the Presentation Brothers.

I begin this brief reflection with a reference to a popular (now somewhat dated) U.S. sitcom. For those unfamiliar, the protagonist is a slightly lazy, self-interested relatively popular sports journalist who seems to be loved by most in his sphere.

The obvious statement to follow such an introduction in the context of my reflection might revolve around the fact that everybody loves Brother Raymond Dwyer. Of course, I am not going to make such an assertion, in fact I am going to suggest quite a reversal! Stay with me.

I have always found it glib, to say the least, to speak generally about somebody in terms not specific to the lived connections between the author and that person – be they physical or metaphysical. For me to broadly state that Br. Ray is a fantastic person, a great teacher, a wonderful chaplain, a committed sports enthusiast would be entirely speculative. I argue that
nobody can make such broad statements and that such statements are inherently impersonal and even damaging to the recipient with their unreliable foundations. I have never sat in Br. Ray’s classes nor have I formally availed of his chaplaincy services and so how could I meaningfully appraise his skills without resorting to broad conjectures?

I am not writing a biography upon Br. Ray, nor am I qualified to do so. I am not writing a synopsis upon Br. Ray as I see no reason to do so. I am not writing to fulfill any obligation as I have not been asked to write upon Br. Ray. Instead, I am reflecting upon two individual moments in time; two connections directly forged between myself and Br. Ray. In doing so, I hope that my words will maintain authenticity and the deep respect which I hold for him; indeed which he deserves. I write not because I am compelled, but because I must.

Early one morning, a number of years ago, I noticed Ray busily working away at a board in our school corridor. It read ‘November we Remember’. I stopped and asked what it was for. He explained its use as a way to remember those who have passed who were important to us. Having very recently lost our dear dog, I hesitantly asked whether her name could be placed upon the board; desperately hoping to find a way to honour her memory. He enthusiastically affirmed my request and immediately went about making a sign for her. Never once did he jump to suggest that it might be disrespectful to the humans passed to place her name alongside (fears of which were whispering in my own head). Ray embraced my vulnerability and helped me to celebrate the memory of one very dear to me.

More recently, I was in school and received a phone call from my wife. Her dad was in the process of passing away. He was a deeply religious man and at that moment would have benefitted from somebody to pray with him. Again, I hesitantly asked Ray if he would be able to help me. His only question was “where is he?” before promptly heading out to his car. Ray generously gave of his own time to a man he had never met. He profoundly contributed to a grieving family and gave a moments’ strength in what was a very trying time. He then returned late at night after my father-in-law had passed away in a show of more solidarity and strength to a family who he had never asked anything of.

Br. Ray is leaving Pres Bray and moving to serve his community in new ways. I am personally deeply saddened to see him move on and if I am honest, I would selfishly like to keep him in Bray. I know Br. Ray is loved by all in Bray but I resist broad generalizations and speaking for masses of people whom I have no authority to do so. In fact, I dare suggest that whether or
not “Everybody loves Raymond” is quite immaterial. Instead what I would like to propose requires a generalization not of the views of the masses but of just one, and maybe I will be afforded that.

I propose that it is in fact Raymond that loves Everybody. Raymond has continued to embody love in his actions and his speech in my short relationship with him. What greater embodiment of the apostolic values could be said of anybody?!

First Year students from Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh and Coláiste Chríost Rí have been participating in recent weeks in a series of retreats at Mardyke House led by Jemma Halpin of the Presentation Brothers Youth Ministry. The boys all seemed to enjoy the experience which was enhanced by the ice-breaker games and the very popular Prayer Stations. The pictures show boys from the Naomh Finín CSN group who attended on Monday 3rd April.

Past pupils, young and old, along with current and former principals, staff members and Board of Management and Trustees representatives gathered on a beautiful sunny Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the foundation of Coláiste Muire. Following a short blessing and joint lighting of candles by the four retired Principals, current Principal, Fergus O’Brien, spoke about the happy joining together of the Presentation and Mercy traditions . Afterwards, as part of an Open Day, there was a wonderful celebration of music, sport, drama and the arts.

Clifton Rooney, art teacher at Presentation College, Bray has designed some very imaginative new logos to explore the values that underpin PBST schools. Clinton has given permission to schools to use these logos should they wish to do so. Clinton explains the thinking behinds the overall design as follows:

The graphic of a spinning or spiraling element of matter attempts to represent the spirit of what we are; the space within is that which cannot be defined – the blank canvas presented to each of us each year to define our years’ actions. The orange and red trail of that matter contains and protects that blank/indefinable space and indeed us by extension. It is noteworthy that the colour palette of the PBST logo is defining the colour palette of the FCCJ logo. The graphic is suggestive of the concept of physical matter and mass and the conundrum posed by the
absence of significant body in matter but its mere suggestion by spinning electrons and charges. This reminds me of the difficulty posed in defining the presentation spirit- it’s there, but what is it?

The ‘f’ is reminiscent of a cross symbolizing faith. That the orange trail makes the arms of the cross is significant in that it intrinsically binds the concept of the spirit of Pres with the Faith underpinning it. The ‘j’ is completed by the dot spinning through the image. The dot moves beyond the ‘j’ to suggest the energy within the community and indeed the continual need to evolve in time – moving forward. This movement is again suggested by the italicized text.

Please click on the links to access the logos:

FCCJ final miniature logo linkage3 FCCJ final logo linkage2

Friday 10th February was a very special day in the history of Coláiste Chríost Rí as Professor Pat O’Shea, newly-appointed President of UCC, returned to his alma mater for a tumultuous homecoming. On an afternoon of great celebration, the entire school community gathered in the sports hall to hear Professor O’Shea speak in glowing terms not only of the academic grounding he received at Críost Rí but also of the rounded education he received there. Clearly, the future President was a talented young man as, along with the academic awards he received, he was also a member of an All-Ireland cross-county winning team. Master of ceremonies on the day was Deputy Principal, Mr Daithi Ó hAodha, and among the speakers were Brother Patrick who led the school in an opening reflection and Mr Michael Carey, school Principal, who, in a heartfelt and generous tribute to Professor O’Shea, spoke of the President’s place in Críost Rí’s proud history of high achievers. Also worthy of mention is the choir under the direction of Mr White who entertained the school’s VIP guest to a medley of mostly Cork-themed songs. The celebration was followed by a reception in the old hall attended by staff – past and present – and a large number of invited guests.

The second Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh Positive Mental Health Week – otherwise known as ‘Feel Good, Be Good, Do Good’ Week – was held in the school from Monday 23rd to Friday 27th January. The entire school – students and teachers – took part in a host of activitiesincluding meditation, yoga, group exercise sessions, coffee mornings, art, musical performances – basically anything that would make people feel good! A number of well-known personalities, including Conor Cusack and Declan Kidney, also visited and spoke to students about looking after your physical and mental well-being. Positive messages and good deeds were the order of the day (or week!) and everyone went home on Friday afternoon energised and generally just feeling good!

A large audience was treated to a wonderful evening of quality entertainment in the auditorium at PBC on Saturday 11th December. Among the many highlights were a skilled performance from the Bodhrán Bookills from St Joseph’s NS, a wonderful rendition of O Holy Night by the very talented Oran Murphy, a star solo performance by PBC teacher, David O’Riordan, and a selection of songs and Christmas carols from two wonderful choirs: Cantate and the City of Cork Male Voice Choir. Unquestionably, however, the star turn on the night was a virtuoso performance on both violin and piano by PBC Transition Year student and Preslink Committee member, Kevin Jansson. Recently returned from his success in Serbia, Kevin demonstrated all the skills that have made him one of Ireland’s most accomplished young musicians. Master (or should that be Mistress?!!) of Ceremonies on the night was Aelin O’Donoghue who kept things moving along with some sharp repartee. Brother Martin reminded us all of the greater purpose behind the event and thanked the backroom team of Enda, Sharon, Liam, Teresa and Val for the incredible work they had done in organising such a special night.
